Cliffs Of Moher Day Tour From Galway

Around the Burren

The road south from Galway climbs into the Burren, a vast sheet of pale limestone that looks, at first, like nowhere else in Ireland, bare grey rock running clean to the horizon. Look closer and it's alive: in late spring the cracks between the stones fill with wildflowers you'd expect on an Alpine meadow and an Arctic shore, somehow growing side by side. You can stop at Poulnabrone, a portal tomb of balanced stone slabs that has stood on the rock for five thousand years, older than the pyramids. There's a small working perfumery set into the landscape if that appeals, and a working sheepdog demonstration can be arranged in the area, where a few whistles send the dog streaking around the hillside to gather a scattered flock into a tight knot in minutes, all worked from a hundred yards off. For anyone who'd rather slow the day right down, a guided walk out into the Burren, with time to hear how the place was formed and farmed, is there for the asking.

Doolin And The Cliffs

Doolin makes a natural stop before the cliffs, a small village that's one of the homes of Irish traditional music, where a session can start up in a pub of an afternoon for no particular reason. Then the Cliffs of Moher themselves, rising more than 200 metres straight out of the Atlantic and running for miles along the coast. You'll have time to walk the path at your own pace, with the Aran Islands out in the bay and, on a clear day, the mountains of Connemara blue on the northern horizon. It's every bit as good as the photographs, which isn't something you can say of many famous places.

From Above, Or From Below

The standard day takes the cliffs from the top, along the path. If you'd like to feel the full scale of them, a boat trip out from the foot of the cliffs can be added on, and from sea level, with the wall of rock towering overhead and seabirds wheeling off the ledges, they're a different thing entirely. The Road Home

Rather than retrace the same route, the drive back to Galway can follow the coast north through Ballyvaughan and Kinvara, two small harbour villages where the Burren runs down to the edge of Galway Bay. It means the last stretch of the day is as easy on the eye as the cliffs were, and Kinvara's little quayside tower house, Dunguaire, makes a good final photo as the light goes.
